As Moses and Elijah were starting to leave, Peter, not even knowing what he was saying, blurted out, “Master, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 34 But even as he was saying this, a cloud overshadowed them, and terror gripped them as the cloud covered them.
35 Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.” 36 When the voice finished, Jesus was there alone. They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen. (Luke 9:33-36 NLT)
Peter needed to learn how to listen. When he heard or saw things he did not like, Peter opened his mouth to speak rather than remaining quiet and listen. He objected to Jesus' prediction of His death. He tried to stop Moses and Elijah from leaving the mountain top. But Jesus had to die to pay the sins of the world. Moses and Elijah could not stay with Jesus on the mountain for that to happen.
Do we really listen to Jesus? We need to learn how to do that. I know I need to learn how to be a better listener when Jesus is talking. Let's try to do a better job of really listening and then responding to Jesus and His Words today.
