After the celebration was over, they started home to Nazareth, but Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents didn’t miss him at first, 44 because they assumed he was among the other travelers. But when he didn’t show up that evening, they started looking for him among their relatives and friends.
45 When they couldn’t find him, they went back to Jerusalem to search for him there. 46 Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions. 47 All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. (Luke 2:43-47 NLT)
Can you imagine what it must have been like for Mary and Joseph to lose Jesus? Think about their prayers that night. "Dear Father, we lost your Son!" Mary and Joseph may have lost Him, but Jesus knew exactly where He was. He was in the Temple talking with the religious teachers.
Jesus told a story about a Lost (Prodigal) Son. The Father kept watching and waiting for His return. Jesus said He came to look for and save the Lost. Then He lost His life on the Cross to save us.
We may lose our way, get lost in thought, or lose out on something; but God the Father will never lose track of us. He is watching out for us. If or when we lose our way, He is waiting to welcome us back Home. Maybe we should spend more time with God in His Word and in His house if we want to stay in touch with Him.
