When they came down from the mountain, the disciples stood with Jesus on a large, level area, surrounded by many of his followers and by the crowds. There were people from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from as far north as the seacoasts of Tyre and Sidon. 18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those troubled by evil spirits were healed. 19 Everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone. (Luke 6:17-19 NLT)
The common people were attracted to Jesus and came from the surrounding region to see, hear, touch and be healed by Him. Jesus had just selected twelve men to be His Disciples. This was their first hands on training event in how to interact with people and change their lives. The people who came were not the rich who could buy an expensive ticket to a "Jesus Concert." Admission was free. The people were not the powerful who wanted to be seen with the most influential and popular person of their time. Those people were critical of Jesus. They were ordinary people who needed Jesus in their lives.
People still need Jesus to help, heal, and direct them, to touch their lives. Jesus has the power to change the world one life at a time. He uses us to reach out to the people around us and tell them that Jesus loves and wants to help them. He wants us to remove any man made rules or requirements that would keep people away. What can we learn from the first lesson Jesus gave His Disciples?
