38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:38-42 NLT)
Jesus visit with Mary and Martha has a lot to say about the choices we make in life. Martha was doing a good thing, fixing the meal for Jesus and her family. Mary chose a better thing, listening to Jesus. Martha complained Mary wasn't helping her. Jesus told Martha that Mary had made the better choice.
Do we ever let a good thing get in the way of a better choice? Do we find justifications for working when we could be worshipping? Do we keep ourselves busy doing good things but fail to spend time with family or with a friend who needs a friend right then?
Setting the right priorities can be a real challenge. It was for Martha. It can be for us. Do become a servant of the good at the expense of the better. Jesus tells us, "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need." (Matthew 6:33)
